The unifying question across this work is how far the descriptive apparatus of the Arabic grammatical tradition can be given a formal, computable treatment — and what has to be added when it cannot.

Teaching

Twelve courses at Kuwait University, from undergraduate to doctoral level: computational linguistics, syntax, semantics, sociolinguistics, lexicography, phonetics and phonology, and the computational processing of Arabic at graduate level. Also C programming in the College of Engineering and Petroleum.

Supervision and examination

Supervision of masters and doctoral theses at Kuwait University and elsewhere in the region, and service on examination committees for theses in computational linguistics and Arabic language.

Where the research goes

Much of this work has been carried into production through Information Age Consulting — the morphological analysis underpins the Arabic spell-checking and text-mining systems, and the sentiment work underpins Social Watcher, which the ITU named a WSIS Prizes Champion in 2022.
